Official WhatsApp API vs Normal WhatsAppCompliance, cost and risk compared for your chatbot

When you connect an AI chatbot or bulk messaging to WhatsApp, you choose between an official channel (WhatsApp Business API) and a normal channel. Here is how they differ and which one we recommend.

What is an official WhatsApp channel?

An official channel uses the WhatsApp Business API. It is designed for businesses: it keeps you compliant, delivers more reliably and supports higher messaging limits. Message fees apply only to messages sent outside the 24-hour customer window.

What is a normal WhatsApp channel?

A normal channel bypasses the official API. It costs less and can offer features the official API does not, but it carries real risks: account suspension, security vulnerabilities and no official support. WhatsApp can restrict or ban these accounts at any time.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose official if the number is your main customer line, you send at volume, or an account ban would hurt sales. This is our recommendation for reliability and compliance.
  • A normal channel may suit low-stakes testing, or extra numbers where you accept the ban risk in exchange for lower cost.

The 24-hour window, explained

When a customer messages you, a 24-hour window opens. Replies you send inside that window are free on the official API. Messages sent outside it are charged (around US$0.08 each). This is why fast replies save money as well as win customers, and why an AI that answers instantly keeps most conversations inside the free window.

Good habits to protect any WhatsApp number

  • Message people who have a reason to hear from you, such as customers who contacted you or opted in.
  • Keep messages relevant and avoid sending the same text to everyone.
  • Reply promptly so conversations stay active.
  • Keep a backup way to reach important customers, such as a phone number or email.

These are general good practices, not guarantees. WhatsApp sets and can change its own rules.
